This week's poem of the week is by Wyn Cooper, the american poet behind Sheryl Crow. Yes, that's right, Sheryl Crows best song lyrics were written by someone else! But Sheryl discovered Wyn, and her use of his poem, 'fun', was the kick-start his poetry career needed (as well as a huge royalties producer!)
Maybe some day a famous musician will use my poems for their songs, making me as famous as Wyn. Until then, let's all enjoy Wyn's poem, Chaos is the New Calm, with all his playfulness and cleverness. A short poem this week, but a very enjoyable one.
Feel free to leave a comment any time. Until next week,
Chaos is the New Calm
by Wyn Cooper
Chaos is the new calm
violence the new balm
to be spread on lips
unused to a kiss.
Left is the new right
as I brace for a fight
with a man who stands
on his remaining hand.
Fetid harbor harbor me
until someone is free
to drive me away
from what happened today.
Don't strand me standing here.
If you leave, leave beer.

Thanks for sharing my poem. It's best to give credit to the original publishers of the poem, so I'll do that for you: this poem first appeared in Poetry magazine, then was reprinted in my new book, Chaos is the New Calm, published by BOA Editions in May 2010, a book which is now in a second printing. For more information on the book and my work in both poetry and music, visit my website, www.wyncooper.com.
